Keg & Brew

The KB Hotel on Foveaux St is a Sydney institution. Mere steps away from Central station, The KB is most well known for being an ‘old man’s’ pub that has kept locals from thirst for almost 80 years. In need of a much needed makeover, we were approached by the team who created Dove & Olive, with their idea to rebrand and reposition the KB as a destination pub. The brief was to create a new identity that not only attracted a new audience, but also didn’t alienate their existing clientele. Evolving the ‘KB’ name into ‘K&B’ – short for Keg & Brew, the new identity and fitout was to reflect the pub’s new focus on craft beers, bourbons and good food, with a distinct deep south and cowboy flavour.

The new identity began with a hand drawn monogram that is influenced by the original tiling and signage of the building meets vintage sign painting from the wild west era. We utilised illustrations of corn and hops to represent the bourbon and beer, and finished the lockup with custom hand drawn typography. We paired this type with playful and tongue in cheek found photographs, along with a series of illustrated patterns which were applied to a suite of stationery, menus, signage and wallpaper throughout the venue. The new K&B is a welcome addition to Surry Hills, with its selection of over 33 craft beers and even more bourbons – and thankfully, Resch’s is still available on tap.
