Letterpress Production Internship

Experience letterpress hands-on, in one of the world’s leading craft production studios

Opportunities for students completing tertiary studies in design or printmaking.

The Distillery’s Student Internship Program is suited for students who are currently studying a tertiary design or printmaking degree, and have an opportunity to complete a component of industry experience.

The program is perfect for ambitious, creatively minded juniors who are open-minded, mature, and love the process of craft while working in a tight-knit team.

A rare opportunity to get involved in the full cycle of design, participants will learn and master key production components in front and away from a computer screen, from project start to finish.

Successfully held since 2011, the program is industry renowned and responsible for helping launch the careers of many leaders in Australia’s specialty design, craft and letterpress industries.

Do you get all giddy when feeling paper stocks?

Are you more excited about creativity outside a screen?

Do you crave crafting beautiful things with your hands?

If so, this program is absolutely perfect for you.

Amazing Learning Opportunities

Joining The Distillery’s Production Team, you will be hands-on from day one; learning and engaging in a variety of production areas including:

  • paper stock selection
  • paper cutting and finishing
  • quality control and packaging projects
  • letterpress plate-making
  • plate setting and registration
  • hand mixing inks
  • general studio errands and management
  • cleaning the press
  • where possible, and only if circumstances align; training to letterpress print on a platen and proofing press

This is a perfect opportunity if you’re a junior designer or printmaker, and seeking to forge a successful creative career in design outside the screen.

The Distillery are especially keen to meet juniors who have self-initiated raw talents in areas including hand-lettering, paper-crafts, and printmaking.

During the program, with your initiative you may also have opportunities to design and produce your own range of stationery projects, and with the right attitude and skills, experience time with our award winning branding and graphic designers.

Your Suitability

Letterpress production is a highly specialised field, and not suitable for all design students. We believe that the following personal and professional qualities are necessary for maximum enjoyment.

  1. loads of natural initiative
  2. lots of enthusiasm
  3. meticulous attention to detail
  4. ridiculous amounts of patience
  5. very high level communication skills
  6. the ability to be satisfied working in a team, while performing junior-level functions
  7. the want and need to be politely pushed

The Distillery take pride in striving to be our very best. With this in mind, our standards are very high and we have a positive, can-do, success-driven, open-minded studio culture.

Requirements & Benefits

The Student Internship Program requires work from our Darlinghurst studio, for a minimum of 3 full days a week. The length of the program is flexible depending on your availability, however we are looking for a commitment of 3 months.

As a part of our team, with approval you will be eligible to use the The Distillery’s letterpress and specialty production resources to complete your own personal projects.
