Project Planning – some key considerations

🧠 Strategy β†’
  • How do you want your audience to feel? Which emotions should we invoke?
  • For this project, how does a digital screen fall short?
  • How will tangibility complement the campaign?
↳ consider for print …
  • What experience do we want to give your audience?
  • What format and size could the piece be?
  • Which paper stocks and colours set the right atmosphere?
πŸ—£οΈ MessageΒ  β†’
  • Can the message be simplified?
  • Is the format widely accessible to your audience?
  • What tone does your brand values and identity guide suggest?
↳ consider for print …
  • Which print techniques are potentially suitable?
  • How can the messaging be presented with the right tone?
🎯 Call to Action
  • What exactly do you want yourΒ  audience to do?
  • How exactly do you want them to do this?
  • They are likely busy. Why will they act?
↳ consider for print …
  • De-cluttering is cathartic. Is the printed piece special enough for your audience to retain, for when the time is right for them to take action?

Here are some methods you can always rely on:

  1. Thick card stock – Substance holds strong
  2. Uncoated touch – Humans are drawn to nature. Select uncoated paper stocks. Avoid glossy, shiny and plastic texture.
  3. Avoid default shapes & sizes – Much like Calibri, standard card sizes and ‘trending’ gravestone arches invoke a generic outcome
  4. Less is more – Black on white is often enough
  5. Deboss is the boss – Subtle or deep letterpress impression offers a refined enhancement. Comic Sans even looks nice with it!

Taking it further

  • Character – Introduce subtle character with an off-white or subtle textured card stock.
  • Foil at volume ‘2’ – Consider limiting foil to selected titles. Black foil is also subtle and smart.
  • Foil at coverage ’10’ + expression ‘1’ – For something different hit it with a large block of foil, delivered in a subtle pearlescent white or silver champagne gold =πŸ‘ŒπŸ».

The Distillery’s Project Service Centre offers resource to help you start and finish on the right foot.
